Add to that a lifetime's worth of pigments from coffee, tea, red wine, and soda that have gotten lodged in tiny cracks in your teeth. The result: that unattractive yellowish-brown tint that's made tooth whitening one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures in the United States. Nearly all cosmetic dentists offer whitening treatments and the number of procedures they perform has jumped about 50 percent each year since 2005, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. More people are also turning to cosmetic enhancements beyond whitening, such as bonding and veneers, which can improve both the function and appearance of crooked, chipped, or worn-down teeth...

National Smile Month is just around the corner, so it’s time to shape up those teeth to sparkle. A recent survey conducted by The American Academy Of Cosmetic Dentistry revealed the following results when cosmetic dentists were asked to vote for their favourite celebrity smiles:

Halle Berry came out tops for best female celebrity smile,whilst Matthew McConaughey was voted best male celebrity smile. Golf legend Tiger Woods scored the hole in one, swooping the vote for male athelete with the best smile whilst Maria Sharpova aced the vote for best female athelete’s smile. Julia Roberts wins the day as the celebtity with the most requested smile whilst Hilary Duff sports the best teen celebrity smile,according to the cosmetic dentists surveyed...

X-rays, root canals, and now, pampering

At her dental appointments, Deann Romanick sips green tea and takes in the scent of lavender and the sounds of new-age music. She gets a free paraffin hand wax treatment, blankets, a warm neck pad and video eyeglasses in which she can watch "Seinfeld" episodes while the dentist works on her teeth.

The pampering eased her through a root canal and a tooth replacement, and now, with her fear of dental work gone, she has moved on to more elective procedures...
